The Black River Canal-Northern Edition
The Steuben Players, renowned for their historical antics, will do a reprise of their 2014 rendition of The Black River Canal. They have updated the original to make it more north country specific. The Erie Canal which was completed in 1825 was an immediate success. So much so that towns north of Rome wanted to take advantage of this superhighway of the 19th century. Caleb Lyon, besides being a large landowner and prosperous businessman, was politically active, a friend of Govenor Dewitt Clinton and a major supporter of the Erie Canal. Caleb and his son Lyman worked tirelessly and financially supported the Black River Canal. They knew the benefit it would bring to their community of Lyonsdale.
The Steuben Players of the Remsen Steuben Historical Society intend to educate and entertain with their interpretation of how it was back in the heyday of the Black River Canal.
